Our society JCCO Victoria is a research-based nonprofit community organization founded in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, for the highest standards of multiculturalism in Canada.
Specifically, while many community organizations are focusing on doing lots of fests and events attracting their members, in contrast JCCO Victoria has been striving to convey select knowledge to the Nikkei community based on detailed and sophisticated researches on the history, culture, religion, education, etc.
Our primary activity is publishing a community journal, “Japonism Victoria” and operating relevant websites “japonism.media” and “japonismvictoria.com.” These publications and websites carry first-rate articles demonstrating explicitly or sometimes implicitly the spirituality of the Japanese culture, that is, the soul of the Nikkei identity.

The community journal, “Japonism Victoria” is delivered in pdf, digital and hard-copy format in the Nikkei community. Our readers include Japanese, those of Japanese heritage and Canadians who are interested in Japanese culture. Another website “japonism.media” operated by us is designed to post particularly well-received articles among those having been published in our community journal “Japonism Victoria,” the articles being re-edited into mobile-friendly pieces. So, it’s almost a collection of clues that help approach the Japanese culture or the spirituality thereof.
Ross Bay Cemetery Japanese Burials
In the southern part of Victoria there is a park cemetery called Ross Bay Cemetery. In this cemetery, there are approximately 150 graves of Japanese immigrants and their children who immigrated to Victoria before the Pacific War. During the war, Japanese immigrants were forcefully relocated from their homes to Japanese-Canadian Internment camps. As a result, there are no families living in Victoria to maintain those burial places.
You might note that the spirits of the deceased are still alive. So, we would like to comfort those spirits specifically by writing articles about the lives of those immigrant families such as their living conditions and psychology during their internment, which is based on the field and literature researches by JCCO Victoria.
In that context, we uploaded the list of people buried there and photos of gravestones and grave markers on this website. We hope it helps the family members and relatives in Japan and other parts of Canada pray for the deceased. Ross Bay Cemetery Japanese Burials
ビクトリア市の南端にRoss Bay Cemetery（ロスベイ霊園）という公園墓地があります。この霊園には，太平洋戦争前にビクトリアに移住し不幸にも亡くなられた日本人移民や幼くして亡くなった子たちの150余柱の墓があります。しかし，大変残念なことに，戦争中に日系人の強制移住が行われた結果，埋葬者の家族はすべてビクトリアから追放され，墓を守る縁故者がまったくいなくなりました。
死者の魂が生き続けることをご存じの方も多いかと存じますが，JCCO Victoriaでは日本人墓地のフィールド調査や文献調査を行い，ビクトリアで当時暮らしていた日系人とその子どもたちの生活状況や心理状態をできる限り想い起こすことで，霊園に埋葬されておられる方々の霊を慰めたいと考えております。
その一貫として，埋葬者名簿と墓石・墓標の写真をウェブサイトに掲載し，日本やカナダ東部など遠方におられるかもしれない親戚・縁者・知人の方々にも埋葬された方々を想い起こして供養していただけるようにしています。詳しくはメニューのPostから日本人墓地に関連する記事をご一読いただけるとありがたく存じます。
